70% of UK SME Websites Mention Reviews But 20% Don't Link to the Source: The Unverifiable Trust Problem

70% of UK SME websites mention reviews on their homepage, but 20% reference them without linking to any verifiable source. For AI systems assessing credibility, an unlinked review claim is a weaker signal.

    Last updated: March 2026

We checked 30 UK small business websites to see how they handle reviews and ratings on their homepage. Most mention reviews — but one in five references them without linking to any verifiable source.

    TL;DR

    • 21 out of 30 UK SME websites (70%) mention reviews, ratings or stars on their homepage
    • 6 out of 30 (20%) mention reviews without linking to any review platform
    • 60% link to at least one review platform
    • 33% mention Trustpilot by name
    • For AI systems assessing business credibility, an unlinked review claim is a weaker signal than a verifiable one

    The findings

    Review mentions vs verifiable links

    Measure Count Percentage
    Mentions reviews/ratings/stars on homepage 21 / 30 70%
Links to at least one review platform 18 / 30 60%
    Mentions Trustpilot by name 10 / 30 33%
Mentions reviews but links to NO platform 6 / 30 20%

    The 20% gap

One in five websites makes review claims on their homepage without linking to any external platform where those reviews can be independently verified.

Why this may matter for AI visibility

AI platforms assess credibility through multiple signals — and third-party reviews are one of the most widely understood trust indicators. A verifiable review claim from a recognised source carries more weight than an unverifiable self-published claim.

    By industry

Industry Mentions reviews Links to platform Gap
    Accountancy (9) 8 (89%) 7 (78%) 1 (11%)
    Plumber (3) 3 (100%) 2 (67%) 2 (67%)
    Marketing Agency (4) 3 (75%) 2 (50%) 1 (25%)
    Personal Trainer (3) 2 (67%) 0 (0%) 1 (33%)
    Legal (3) 0 (0%) 0 (0%) 0 (0%)

    What businesses can do

    • If you mention reviews, link to the source.
    • Use recognised platforms.
    • Consider review schema.
    • Keep review information current.

    FAQ

Does having reviews affect AI visibility?

Reviews represent third-party validation. AI systems that assess business credibility may consider this kind of ecosystem signal.

Why does it matter if review mentions are linked?

A linked review claim points to a verifiable source. An unlinked claim is a self-published statement with no external validation.

Is it bad to mention reviews without a link?

Not harmful, but a missed opportunity. Adding a link converts an unverifiable claim into a verifiable one.
