AI Search Statistics UK 2026

Most UK businesses are not yet readable by AI search. In Rank4AI audits of UK SME websites, 77% send conflicting signals to AI platforms, 87% have no llms.txt file, and only 4% use Person schema to connect a named individual to the business. Meanwhile the audience has already moved: Google AI Overviews reached over 1 billion users globally within a year of launch (Google I/O 2024) and ChatGPT passed 200 million weekly active users (OpenAI). The figures below are first-party Rank4AI research where stated, and named third-party sources for market data, with every number linked to its original source.

Compiled by Rank4AI. First-party figures from Rank4AI audits of UK SME websites. Market figures attributed to the named sources listed at the foot of this page.

How to read these numbers
“Two stories sit in this data and they pull in opposite directions. The audience has already moved to AI answers, but the supply side has not: most UK SME sites still cannot be parsed cleanly by an AI system. The figure I would act on first is the 70% of AI Overview citations that come from pages already on page one of Google. For most UK businesses the route into AI answers still runs through conventional ranking plus verifiable entity signals, not a separate AI trick. Fix the signal conflicts before chasing exotic tactics.”
